Scholarships
Explore Australian scholarships, grants and bursaries with practical guidance on eligibility, coverage, application evidence, deadlines and maintaining an award throughout your studies.
A scholarship is competitive and never guaranteed. Confirm the official eligibility, value, duration and conditions directly with the awarding organisation. Many awards cover only part of tuition and do not fund all living, travel, visa or insurance costs.
Scholarships for international students
Scholarships are offered by the Australian Government, state and territory initiatives, universities, TAFE institutes, other education providers, research bodies and private organisations. Opportunities may be based on academic merit, research potential, leadership, community impact, financial circumstances, nationality, region or field of study.
Some scholarships are automatically assessed with an admission application, while others require a separate form, statement, references, portfolio, research proposal or interview. Always follow the official process for the specific award.
Main scholarship categories
Education provider scholarships
Australian education providers regularly offer international student scholarships. These can include automatic tuition discounts, competitive excellence awards, faculty scholarships, destination bursaries and accommodation or commencement grants.
Compare the scholarship against the complete course cost. Check whether the discount applies to the first term, first year or entire program, whether it is calculated on tuition only, and whether annual indexation or non-tuition fees remain payable.
Australia Awards Scholarships
Australia Awards Scholarships are highly competitive long-term awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for citizens of participating developing countries. Study must align with the development priorities and rules published in the applicant's country profile.
Benefits can include full tuition, return travel, an establishment allowance, contribution to living expenses, introductory academic support and Overseas Student Health Cover for the award holder. Awardees must comply with the scholarship contract and are generally required to leave Australia for at least two years after completing the scholarship.
Research Training Program
The Australian Government Research Training Program supports eligible domestic and international students undertaking accredited research doctorate and research master's degrees at participating universities.
Support can include a tuition fee offset, stipend and allowances. Students apply directly to their chosen university, not to the Department of Education. Each university sets its competitive selection process and additional criteria, and only a limited share of RTP funding may be allocated to international students.
How to apply for scholarships
Define your study profile
Confirm course level, field, intake, academic record, nationality, research interests and financial need.
Search official opportunities
Review provider pages, Study Australia, government programs and research-office scholarship listings.
Check every eligibility rule
Confirm citizenship, course, intake, grade, English, experience, offer and application requirements.

Submit focused evidence of achievement, leadership, goals, research potential or circumstances.
Review award conditions
Before accepting, understand coverage, duration, progress standards, reporting and repayment conditions.
Scholarship eligibility
Criteria can include academic grades, a qualifying offer, English proficiency, nationality, residency, field of study, study level, professional experience, research publications, leadership, community contribution or evidence of financial circumstances.
Meeting the minimum criteria makes an applicant eligible for consideration but does not guarantee selection. Competitive awards compare applicants against the strength and priorities of the full pool.
Documents commonly requested
Documents can include passport, academic transcripts and certificates, English results, admission offer, CV, personal or scholarship statement, references, awards, evidence of leadership or volunteering, employment records and financial documents.
Research applicants may also need a proposal, publications, research experience, referee reports and evidence of contact with a potential supervisor. Use the awarding body's required format and word limits.
Scholarship application checklist
- Use only official scholarship and education-provider information.
- Check eligibility, intake and closing date before preparing the application.
- Confirm whether assessment is automatic or requires a separate submission.
- Tailor every statement to the award's purpose and selection criteria.
- Provide accurate, verifiable achievements and submit references on time.
- Calculate the remaining tuition and living costs after scholarship coverage.
- Read progress, enrolment, conduct and repayment conditions before acceptance.
Writing a strong scholarship statement
Respond directly to the selection criteria using specific examples. Explain your academic and professional direction, why the chosen course matters, what impact you have already created and how the scholarship will support realistic future outcomes.
Avoid generic praise and unsupported claims. Respect originality rules: some programs restrict the use of generative AI in application responses, so always check and follow the official instructions.
What does a scholarship cover?
Coverage varies from a small fixed bursary to full tuition and living support. Check tuition percentage, maximum value, payment schedule, excluded fees, Overseas Student Health Cover, accommodation, travel, dependants and whether the award continues through the entire course.
Prepare funds for every uncovered expense. A scholarship offer does not automatically satisfy admission or Student visa financial requirements.
Maintaining a scholarship
Recipients may need to remain enrolled full-time, maintain a minimum grade or satisfactory progress, comply with visa and provider rules and seek approval before changing course, campus, study load or leave arrangements.
Failure to meet conditions can lead to suspension, cancellation or repayment. Keep the award letter and promptly notify the scholarship office of circumstances affecting study.
Avoid scholarship scams
Be cautious of guaranteed awards, requests to pay an individual, unofficial bank accounts, pressure to act immediately or messages from unverified domains. Confirm every opportunity through the official government, provider or awarding-body website.
