Admissions

Navigate Australian course admissions with a clear process for profile assessment, CRICOS course selection, entry requirements, document preparation, applications, offers, credit assessment, acceptance and Confirmation of Enrolment.

Admission and a Student visa are separate decisions. An offer or Confirmation of Enrolment confirms an education-provider outcome; it does not guarantee a visa, scholarship, employment or migration pathway.

How Australian admissions work

Australian schools, English colleges, vocational providers and higher education institutions set their own entry criteria within applicable education standards. Requirements differ by course, study level, campus and intake, so every application should be prepared for the specific program.

The provider assesses academic readiness, English ability and any course-specific prerequisites. It may also consider work experience, gaps in study, portfolio quality, research capacity, previous visa history or whether the proposed course represents logical progression.

Entry requirements by study sector

ELICOS: General English may have no academic prerequisite, while exam preparation can require a placement test.
Schools: requirements vary by school, year level, age, English ability and state or territory.
VET: previous study, prerequisite subjects, English ability or relevant experience may be required.
Undergraduate: completion of Australian Year 12 or a recognised equivalent plus course prerequisites.
Postgraduate: a relevant bachelor qualification, with experience or prior discipline requirements for some courses.
Research: research preparation, proposal, supervisor fit and evidence of academic research ability.

Choose the right course before applying

Assess how the course connects to your previous education, experience and future goals. Compare curriculum, qualification level, professional accreditation, placement requirements, teaching location, total duration, tuition, scholarships and graduate outcomes.

International students intending to apply for a Student visa should verify the provider, course and campus on CRICOS. For regulated careers, separately check the professional registration or licensing body's requirements.

The Australian admission process

01

Assess your profile

Review academics, English, work history, study gaps, career goals, preferred location, intake and budget.

02

Shortlist courses and providers

Compare suitable CRICOS options and confirm entry criteria, deadlines and required supporting evidence.

03

Prepare and lodge applications

Complete each form accurately and submit clear academic, English, identity and course-specific documents.

04

Respond to the offer

Satisfy any conditions and carefully review course details, fees, refunds and enrolment terms before acceptance.

05

Obtain the CoE and plan the visa

After acceptance and required payment, receive the CoE and separately prepare the Student visa application.

Documents commonly required

Standard documents can include passport, academic transcripts, completion certificates, English results, CV, employment references, statement of purpose or course questionnaire, previous offer or visa records and evidence of any name change.

Course-specific materials may include a portfolio, audition, interview, prerequisite syllabus, professional registration, referee reports, research proposal or communication with a potential supervisor. Clear English translations should accompany documents issued in another language.

English-language requirements

Providers set course admission standards and identify the tests, scores and validity periods they accept. Required scores can vary by course and may be higher for programs involving placements, professional accreditation or significant communication responsibilities.

Provider admission English requirements and Student visa English evidence rules are not always identical. Applicants should check both separately and ensure results remain valid for the relevant stage.

Conditional and unconditional offers

A conditional offer means one or more requirements remain outstanding, such as final academic results, English evidence, certified documents or prerequisite completion. An unconditional offer indicates that the provider has accepted the application based on the evidence assessed, subject to the written agreement and enrolment process.

Read the full offer carefully. Check the course title, CRICOS code, campus, intake, duration, fees, deposit, scholarship, conditions, credit, refund policy, cancellation rules and acceptance deadline.

Credit transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning

Previous formal study may support credit transfer, while relevant existing knowledge and skills may be assessed through Recognition of Prior Learning. Providers decide credit under their policies and can request detailed subject outlines, learning outcomes, assessment information or employment evidence.

A credit decision can change course duration, tuition and the CoE. Obtain the final written outcome before accepting the offer if credit is important to your study and financial plan.

Application quality checklist

  • Apply to a course that represents credible academic and career progression.
  • Verify the provider, course and campus on CRICOS.
  • Meet all academic, English and course-specific prerequisites.
  • Use consistent information across forms, CV, statements and supporting documents.
  • Disclose study gaps, previous refusals and relevant history accurately when asked.
  • Review offer conditions, total fees, refund terms and credit before acceptance.
  • Keep copies of every application, offer, receipt, agreement and CoE.

Accepting an offer and receiving a CoE

If you decide to proceed, complete the provider's acceptance process, sign or otherwise accept the written agreement and pay the required deposit. For applicants under 18, a parent or legal guardian may need to accept the agreement and suitable welfare arrangements must be addressed.

The provider issues a Confirmation of Enrolment after acceptance and payment requirements are met. The CoE confirms enrolment details and is normally included with a Student visa application.

Packaged course admissions

A package can combine English, foundation, diploma or other pathway study with a principal course where there is clear progression. Each component has separate admission, fee and CoE details, and progression usually depends on meeting specified academic or English results.

Review the full package duration, gaps, provider arrangements and what happens if you do not meet the progression condition. Do not assume entry into the final course is unconditional unless the written offer confirms it.

Scholarships and application timing

Scholarships may require a separate form, personal statement, references, portfolio or earlier deadline. Apply well before the intake because assessment, condition fulfilment, acceptance, CoE issuance and the Student visa process all require time.

Admission processing varies by provider and can take longer for research programs, competitive courses, credit assessments or applications requiring additional checks.

After admission

After receiving the CoE, prepare the separate Student visa application, arrange Overseas Student Health Cover where required, plan finances and accommodation and complete any provider pre-arrival tasks. Do not make non-refundable travel commitments until the required visa is granted.
