Parent Migration

Australian Parent Visa Pathways

Australian Parent visas offer temporary and permanent options for eligible parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens, with different costs, queues, age and location rules.

There is no single Parent visa suitable for every family. The correct pathway depends on the parent's age, location, family balance, sponsor, budget, desired stay and ability to manage queue-based processing.

Understanding Parent Migration

Parent migration includes permanent non-contributory visas, higher-cost contributory visas, onshore aged-parent options and a temporary sponsored pathway. Most permanent Parent visas are capped and queued because demand exceeds annual program places.

Permanent pathways commonly require an eligible settled child sponsor, the Balance of Family test and an Assurance of Support. The temporary Sponsored Parent visa has different criteria and does not itself provide permanent residence.

Main Parent visa options

Parent Visa (Subclass 103)
Contributory Parent Visa (143/173)
Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804)
Contributory Aged Parent (864/884)
Sponsored Parent Temporary Visa 870
Direct and staged pathways

Parent Visa – Subclass 103

Subclass 103 is a permanent non-contributory pathway with lower visa charges than contributory options but a significantly longer processing queue. Standard applicants generally need a settled child sponsor, Balance of Family test and Assurance of Support.

Contributory Parent Visa – Subclass 173 and 143

Subclass 173 is temporary for up to two years and can lead to permanent Subclass 143. Applicants may also apply directly for Subclass 143. These options involve substantially higher charges but are generally processed ahead of non-contributory Parent visas.

Aged Parent Visa – Subclass 804

Subclass 804 is an onshore permanent pathway for applicants old enough to receive the Australian age pension. It is capped and queued and generally requires the Balance of Family test, an eligible sponsor and an Assurance of Support.

Contributory Aged Parent – Subclass 884 and 864

Subclass 884 is a temporary two-year onshore visa that can be followed by permanent Subclass 864. Eligible applicants may also apply directly for Subclass 864. Both require the pension-age criterion and involve significant contributory charges.

Sponsored Parent Temporary Visa – Subclass 870

Subclass 870 allows an approved sponsor's parent to visit Australia temporarily for three or five years, with a maximum cumulative stay subject to program rules. It does not require the Balance of Family test and does not directly lead to permanent residence.

Core permanent Parent visa requirements

Most permanent Parent pathways require an eligible child who is settled in Australia as an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. The sponsorship and applicant eligibility are separately assessed.

Applicants commonly need to pass the Balance of Family test, obtain an Assurance of Support when requested, satisfy health and character requirements and disclose all children and family members, whether migrating or not.

How to choose a Parent visa

01

Check parent age and location

Determine whether an aged onshore pathway is available or an offshore/general Parent option is needed.

02

Map the family

List every child and stepchild, location and immigration status to assess the Balance of Family test.

03

Assess the sponsor

Check the child's citizenship or residence, settled status and eligibility for the selected pathway.

04

Compare time and cost

Balance contributory charges, queue periods, Assurance of Support and temporary alternatives.

05

Confirm visa and location rules

Review current visa conditions, bridging implications, application location and decision requirements before lodging.

The Balance of Family test

A parent generally passes if at least half of their children and stepchildren are eligible children in Australia, or more eligible children live in Australia than in any other single country. The test cannot be waived for compassionate circumstances.

The test does not apply to the temporary Subclass 870 pathway and limited exemptions exist for specified Retirement visa pathway applicants.

Assurance of Support

Most permanent Parent visa applicants must obtain an Assurance of Support before grant. The assurer accepts financial responsibility so the visa holder does not rely on specified government assistance during the assurance period, and a financial bond may be required.

Queues, costs and lawful status

Most permanent Parent visa categories are capped and queued. Contributory visas involve higher charges but generally shorter queues than non-contributory pathways. Published queue release dates should be checked instead of relying on fixed estimates.

Lodging a Parent visa does not always provide an onshore bridging visa. Applicants must independently maintain lawful status and comply with application and decision location rules for their selected subclass.

Important Parent Visa Considerations

  • Confirm whether the pathway is temporary or permanent.
  • Assess the Balance of Family test before committing to costs.
  • Check sponsor status and settlement in Australia.
  • Compare contributory charges with queue expectations.
  • Review pension-age criteria for aged-parent pathways.
  • Do not assume an onshore application provides a bridging visa.
  • Check current fees, queues and location rules before lodging.

Documents commonly required

Documents may include passports, birth and marriage records, evidence linking parents and children, each child's location and immigration status, sponsor status and settlement records, family composition evidence, financial documents, police certificates, health examinations, Assurance of Support and dependent-family records.
